In Harmony: DFS and Hibiki launch special edition Master’s Select

A limited edition special packaging of Hibiki Japanese Harmony Master’s Select has been launched in partnership with DFS Group (DFS), available initially at Singapore Changi Airport and Hong Kong International Airport.

With a RRP of US$160, this Hibiki limited edition will roll out in other regions during 2016 and follows the introduction of Hibiki Japanese Harmony Master’s Select (ABV 43%) exclusively into global travel retail last October.

The limited edition bottle honours the artistry of Japanese culture and celebrates Hibiki as a harmony of Japanese nature and craftsmanship. The artistic and delicate design highlights the traditional Japanese symbols of the Sakura flower (cherry blossom), a Goshoguruma (royal carriage) and Ryusuimon (streaming water). During Japan’s Edo period (1608-1868) these were seen as symbols for good fortune and prosperity and often used as special gifts for the Shogun.

Hibiki Japanese Harmony Master’s Select will be featured in Explore the Whiskies of the World, a new global initiative to showcase (Hibiki owner) Beam Suntory’s range, which invites shoppers to explore whiskies from the five corners of the globe. This interactive space will be showcased for two months in both airports and also at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

Explore the Whiskies of the World takes travelers on a journey around the world, giving them the rare opportunity to experience leading whiskies from Scotland, Ireland, USA, Canada and Japan. The activation enables whisky connoisseurs to sample and engage in a sensory experience and learn about brands, including Laphroaig (Scotland), Connemara (Ireland), Jim Beam (USA), Canadian Club (Canada) and Hibiki (Japan).

The activation will include sampling and a sensory element where consumers can heighten their experience by smelling the different aromas associated with each whisk(e)y. They will be invited to delve deeper into the collection using an iPad and take away a tasting passport complete with tasting notes and brand information, which will be available in English, Cantonese and Mandarin.

The installations will include branded bars and displays, highlighting a product of the week and gift with purchase offer, a luxury overnight bag. These can be found at DFS stores in Changi terminals 2 and 3 and Hong Kong terminals 1, 2 and 7.

Patrón Extra Añejo gets exclusive launch at DFS Singapore Changi

$

Patrón Spirits International has partnered with DFS Group to launch Patrón Extra Añejo 5 Años at Singapore Changi Airport.

Patrón Extra Añejo 5 Años is made from 100% Weber blue agave, which has been baked in brick ovens for three days. The limited edition, travel retail exclusive Tequila is only available in Asia through DFS.

The agave was then crushed using both the traditional ‘tahona’ process and a more modern roller mill method, before being aged for five years at the Hacienda Patrón distillery in Mexico.

Both “hybrid” new American/limousine oak medium toasted barrels and used whiskey barrels were used for maturation.

The resulting Tequila is described as “notably light in colour” with “intense aroma” and “complex flavours”.

“Extra añejo Tequilas are very difficult to create because Tequila that has aged for too long in the barrel can take on too much wood taste and lose much of their natural agave flavour,” said Patrón master distiller, Francisco Alcaraz.

“But through the years of tasting different wood types, combined with placing barrels in different microclimates within our ageing room, we have proudly created an extra añejo Tequila with just the right balance of wood that complements and doesn’t overpower the Tequila’s agave characteristics.”

Brooke Supernaw, DFS Group’s senior vice president spirits, wine and tobacco added: “Patrón’s Extra Añejo 5 Años’ unique ageing process, intense aroma and complex flavours has created a singular Tequila that we’re confident travellers in Asia will love.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Patrón to bring this rare extra añejo Tequila to Asia for the first time at DFS, Singapore Changi Airport and look forward to sharing its heritage and craftsmanship with our customers.”

Less than 500 cases of Patrón Extra Añejo 5 Años have been produced, with the liquid only available in global travel retail. The 750ml 40% abv bottle retails at Changi Airport at S$280 (about US$202).

Hot Stuff: Martell celebrates Chinese New Year with a new Cordon Bleu limited edition

Martell Cognac has launched Cordon Bleu Intense Heat Cask Finish – a limited edition reinterpretation of the iconic Cordon Bleu featuring a reinvigorated, complex blend and an eye-catching new package design.
Martell Cordon Bleu Intense Heat Cask Finish is created through a toasting and six month finishing process never before used by Martell. The result is a cognac that retains the exceptional quality of the original Cordon Bleu but with heightened fruit and spice taste notes. By increasing the heat applied to Oak casks in a technique called ‘chauffe crocodile’, the new cognac boasts intense aromas, a fruity citrus sweetness, a toasted nuttiness and robust spice.

The new limited edition is presented in a deep blue box artfully embossed to replicate a charred wood effect. More strikingly still, invisible thermochromic inks, which react with body temperature, turn fiery red when the box is rubbed, creating the illusion of glowing embers.

Throughout January and February 2017, travellers in Hong Kong International Airport, Singapore Changi Airport, Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, China & Malaysia airports and Hong Kong border shops are invited to experience Martell Cordon Bleu Intense Heat Cask Finish through tasting activities in store. In celebration of Chinese New Year, Asia Pacific Travel Retail customers who purchase Cordon Bleu Intense Heat Cask Finish will also receive a complimentary special edition red shopping bag.

Martell Cordon Bleu Intense Heat Cask Finish is available in Asia Pacific Travel Retail from 1st January 2017.

For the first time in three years, Marc Jacobs taps a solo star for his spring-summer 2017 campaign.

Frances Bean Cobain, the daughter of Courtney Love and the late Kurt Cobain, appears in the black and white advertisements. David Sims shot the 24-year-old in the studio as well as on the city streets. While the spring runway show was inspired by 90’s ravers, these campaign shots channel a more modern grunge vibe.

Frances models in embellished babydoll dresses, platform sandals as well as retro inspired frames. About starring in the new campaign, Frances says, “I’m representing what a general, standard, average human girl would look like wearing these clothes. I think that’s why Marc picked me for this.”

DFS launches 2017 Masters of Wines and Spirits in Singapore

DFS Group (DFS), the world’s leading luxury travel retailer, launched its sixth annual Masters of Wines and Spirits in Singapore on Saturday, March 25. The highly-anticipated Masters of Wines and Spirits program brings together an extraordinary collection of more than 60 Cognacs, wines and whiskies from over 50 legendary houses.

Unveiled at a spectacular gala event in partnership with the Changi Airport Group on Singapore’s historic Tras Street, the curated collection will be exhibited in store and available for sale at DFS, Singapore Changi Airport’s Wines and Spirits Duplexes at Terminal 2 and 3 (see previous story).

Inspired by the world traveller’s desire for discovery, DFS’ team of experts scoured the globe, working hand-in-hand with leading producers of Champagne, Cognacs, whiskies and wines to curate an exceptional collection of extremely rare and one-of-a-kind pieces available only at DFS.

“Each piece in this year’s Masters of Wines and Spirits collection is a testament to the craftsmanship of the brands and our relationships with our customers,” said Philippe Schaus, Chairman and CEO, DFS Group. “We’re thrilled to bring together this fantastic assortment of the world’s leading wines and spirits once again to Singapore and present an unmissable opportunity for connoisseurs to build their collection with DFS.”

At the heart of this year’s gala event was the city and spirit of Singapore – the birthplace of DFS’ Masters of Wines and Spirits. Celebrating the unique heritage of the Lion City, DFS hosted its gala along the historic Tras Street with VIP guests joining the world’s leading brands and their ambassadors for an evening of entertainment amongst iconic shophouses. DFS transformed individual shophouses into celebrations of signature wines and spirits where guests interacted with ambassadors from iconic brands, offering their insight, knowledge and exclusive tastings.

This year’s event also featured hands-on master classes and educational tastings for select VIP guests. At The Dalmore house, Master Blender Richard Patterson hosted a bespoke tasting to showcase The Dalmore’s rich heritage and artistry. Frederic Dezauzier, Global Brand Ambassador of CAMUS introduced guests to the smallest and rarest cru in the Cognac region, Borderies, providing a unique tasting experience featuring a selection of CAMUS Borderies Single-Cru Cognacs, including a Borderies Vintage and an exclusive Borderies blend that has never been released. Château Margaux’s Regional Ambassador Thibault Pontallier conducted a vertical tasting across decades of the brand’s history.

Guests were also given an opportunity to meet key whisky brand ambassadors brought together by DFS’ very own The Whiskey House – an exclusive and interactive whisky retail concept available to travellers at DFS, Singapore Changi Airport. Moderated by DFS Group’s Director of Spirits Frederik Vanden Bulcke, The Whiskey House provided guests with an interactive discussion and guided tasting with Brendan McCarron of Glenmorangie, Brian Kinsman of Glenfiddich, David Stewart of The Balvenie and Mike Miyamoto of Hibiki, all sharing their thoughts on heritage and innovation in the whisky industry.

“Returning to our traditional gala format, this year’s Masters of Wines and Spirits created an intimate and curated experience, tailored for our customers,” said Brooke Supernaw, DFS Group’s Senior Vice President Wines, Spirits, Tobacco, Food and Gifts. “Each piece in the collection was selected with our customers in mind, bringing together a spectacular array of the world’s finest and rarest wines and spirits right in the heart of historic Singapore.”

Louis Vuitton will be opening its first store at Changi Airport in January next year. Known as ‘The Glass House’ this store promises to be a spectacular two story ode to Parisian chic…

Iconic fashion house Louis Vuitton will bring its exquisite, timeless French charm to Changi Airport in January 2018, taking centre stage in the sparkling splendour of a grand, new garden in Terminal 3’s Departure Transit Hall. The luxury brand’s first duplex boutique in an airport promises to excite globetrotting fashionistas and elevate travellers’ retail experience to new heights.

Passengers departing from Terminal 3 next year will be greeted with the Louis Vuitton glass house prominently nestled in Changi Airport’s latest themed garden – the ‘Crystal Garden’. Inspired by artistic floral centrepieces, the new space will be chicly adorned with tiered garden beds featuring a curated selection of flora and spheres of artisan glass sculptures.

Taking centre stage in the Crystal Garden is the two-storey Louis Vuitton boutique, which joins the ranks of the Wines & Spirits and Cosmetics & Perfumes duplex stores at the central piazza, where a refined and personalised retail experience awaits shoppers. Covering 530 square metres, this is the first airport store in Asia Pacific to be directly managed by Louis Vuitton, with a strong, tailored product mix that will best fit travellers’ unique preferences. There will be even more reason to shop at the Changi Airport retail haven.

Louis Vuitton has only two other stores, which are not duplexes, in airports around the world: London’s Heathrow Airport and Seoul’s Incheon International Airport.

Mr Lee Seow Hiang, CEO of Changi Airport Group, says, “We are thrilled to partner Louis Vuitton, with its rich travel heritage, who shares our vision to redefine the future of luxury retail in an airport. The revolutionary duplex store, set amidst an elegant Crystal Garden, will become a distinctive attraction for passengers who fly through Changi Airport, and we look forward to embarking on an exciting journey of discovery with them when the store opens.”

Mr Michael Burke, Chairman and CEO of Louis Vuitton, adds, “Louis Vuitton awaits the perfect moment and chooses the perfect place to open a new store. Singapore Changi Airport is such an important location for us, and we are happy to offer this new store, not only to our Asian customers but also the international travellers who transit by this airport. Louis Vuitton is a brand intrinsically related to the history of modern travel. Louis Vuitton has refined the Art of Travel since its creation in 1854, constantly developing new innovations. Given the right place and the right timing, it was more than natural for Louis Vuitton to create a space inside Singapore Changi Airport, dedicated to modern travellers.”

Since its opening in 1981, Changi Airport has pioneered the concept of airport gardens, now well-loved among travellers. This is the first time Changi is integrating a feature garden with a retail store – a testament to how the airport constantly strives to rejuvenate its award-winning amenities and offerings to enhance the Changi Experience.

With over 76,000 square metres of retail floor space, Changi Airport is a destination for shoppers and diners from around the world. Offering a refreshing mix of exciting brands, extensive product ranges, and innovative concepts, Changi Airport achieved retail sales of S$2.3 billion in 2016.

For the first time in Changi Airport, two core duty-free categories – Liquor & Tobacco and Cosmetics & Perfumes, will combine and operate in a single integrated duty-free zone in the transit area. Located just after centralised immigration and security screening, passengers can shop for their favourite duty-free purchases from both product categories seamlessly and combine all their duty-free purchases in a single transaction, bringing greater convenience and time savings.

From the integrated duty-free zone, passengers will then be greeted with an ambience of elegance and grandeur through a cluster of 11-metre high double-volume façade outlets, with visually impactful storefront designs. This zone will offer a selection of popular retail brands – Charles & Keith, Coach & Furla, Gassan Watches, Michael Kors, The Cocoa Trees and TWG Tea Boutique. The high in-store ceilings enable brands to execute creative interior designs, to express their unique qualities.

Another first for Changi, T4 will also introduce a heritage zone, inspired by Peranakan shophouses nestled around Singapore, and designed to take passengers a step back in time while shopping and dining. This zone will house familiar traditional brands Bee Cheng Hiang, Bengawan Solo, Curry Times, Eu Yan Sang and Heavenly Wang, with heritage-themed interior design and furnishings to invoke a sense of nostalgia for passengers.

Over a quarter of retail and dining options new at Changi

Retail shops opening their first outlet in Changi Airport will offer a greater range of shopping choices for passengers. These include trendy, home-grown footwear label PAZZION, world-renowned paper maker Moleskine, as well as British retailer WHSmith – which will be opening their first Singapore bookstore in the T4 transit area.

For dining, passengers and airport visitors will get to savour a wide selection of local and international cuisines. In the transit area, new outlets include Tiger’s Den, serving bar food and light snacks, as well as Treasures (Yi Dian Xin) by Imperial Treasure, offering a wide range of dim sum options for passengers.

In the public area, airport visitors will be able to dine at 11 F&B outlets, including new-at-Changi restaurants such as local food chain Andes at Astons, London Fat Duck, Old Street Bak Kut Teh and Sushi Goshin by Akashi. Food Emporium by NTUC Foodfare – also a new tenant at Changi, will operate a food court with colonial-inspired design features, carrying a wide range of local favourites such as traditional chicken rice, “scissor-cut” curry rice, and Hakka style Yong Tau Foo.

Ms Lim Peck Hoon, Changi Airport Group’s Executive Vice-President of Commercial said, “T4 marks an exciting phase of growth for Changi Airport; and we are using the opportunity to celebrate the idea of shopping as a fun and interactive experience for our passengers. From the impressive double-volume façade shops to a heritage-themed zone, passengers will be able to indulge in a wide variety of fashionable shopping and interesting dining options. We are excited to welcome the new tenants that are joining us at Changi Airport, to offer a larger shopping and dining selection for everyone.”

Interior design works for the commercial spaces in T4 are in progress. The terminal will begin operations in the second half of this year.

John Dewar & Sons Fine Whisky Emporium has opened at Singapore Changi Airport – hosted by duty-free retailer DFS Group this new interpretation of the Emporium is a first of its kind in Asia Pacific.

Located in the Terminal 2 Wines & Spirits Duplex store, the Emporium was designed to attract millennial consumers with a storytelling installation.

The opening of the concept coincided with the DFS Whiskey Festival, which took place in June, when brand ambassador Euan Auld led tutored tastings.

The two-month pop-up sees shoppers explore flavour profiles of the Dewar’s portfolio through vapour samplings, and taste the range from ceramic egg cups presented on a wooden stave.

Showcased expressions include Dewar’s 15 Year Old, Dewar’s 18 Year Old, Craigellachie 13 Year Old, Royal Brackla 12 Year Old, Royal Brackla 16 Year Old and Royal Brackla 21 Year Old.

Above the Fountain Bar in the Duplex Store, Dewar’s 18 Year Old is featured as a principal visual as part of a distillery-quality, copper piping display to communicate the production behind the whisky.

“It’s exciting to be one of the first markets to launch this new interpretation which engages shoppers with the whisky category in a radically new and intriguing way,” said Vinay Golikeri, regional director, Asia Pacific & Middle East Africa, Bacardi GTR.

“Changi is a key airport for us to reach millennials and stage 2 luxury shoppers in the region. We are introducing them to the originality and fun of the Dewar’s family and delivering penetration and trade-up as they explore the versatility of the range.”

Brooke Supernaw DFS Group senior vice president for spirits, wine, tobacco, food and gifts, added: “We’re proud to partner with Dewar’s to enhance our in-store experience at DFS, Singapore Changi Airport and bring travellers John Dewar & Sons Fine Whisky Emporium exclusively in Asia.”
